Ultrasonic meters work based on the principle of measurement of the signal propagation times. Average flow rate is calculated by the devices based on the measurement differences between forward and reverse flow directions.

Ultrasonic meters are meant for highly specific requirements from measuring devices and is not intended to be used where there are flow variations, vibrations from common pumps etc., and in regions of extensive temperature changes.
